Chiefs place RB Jerick McKinnon on Reserved/Injured list

After placing wide receiver Skyy Moore on the Reserved/Injured list earlier this week, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced another player will be done for the season. On Sunday, the team placed running back Jerick McKinnon on IR with a groin injury.

As a result of McKinnon heading to IR, the Chiefs have signed running L’Mical Perine to an active roster contract. Practice team members nose tackle Mike Pennel and wide receiver Montrell Washington were moved to the 53-man roster via standard elevation.

It’s a bit of a surprise that McKinnon’s season is coming to an end despite him not practicing this week with a groin setback. The team had already determined on Friday’s injury report that he would not be available for when the Raiders arrive at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday but it didn’t appear that serious of an injury for him to end up on IR.

Now, the Chiefs have a thinned-out backfield with two unproven rushers in Deneric Prince and L’Mical Perine waiting in reserve in case something happens to Isiah Pacheco or Clyde Edwards-Helaire. McKinnon made the most impact for the Chiefs late last season and during their postseason run to a Super Bowl championship. This year, Kansas City need to find some else to fill that role.

More information surrounding McKinnon’s injury will be revealed after the team plays their Week 16 matchup tomorrow. McKinnon finishes the 2023 campaign with 21 carries for 60 yards rushing and a touchdown and 25 receptions for 192 yards and four touchdowns.
