Kansas City Chiefs assistant and son of Head Coach Andy Reid, Britt Reid, was in a car crash that involved multiple vehicles on Thursday night, as first reported by 41 Action News, a local Kansas City news station.

According to the police report, the incident occurred at 9:10 p.m. Thursday. A gray Chevy Impala ran out of gas on the southbound entrance ramp from Stadium Drive on Interstate 435. The driver called relatives for help; they responded to provide aid and parked their vehicle, a Chevy Traverse, south of the Impala with the lights on.

That’s when a third vehicle, a Ram Laramie Sport pickup truck, which Kansas City television station KSHB says was driven by Britt Reid, came along and struck first the left front of the disabled Impala and then slammed into the rear of the Traverse, where two children, ages 4 and 5 were sitting in the backseat. Both children were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with the 5-year-old suffering life-threatening injuries.

The Chiefs left the following statement when the organization became aware of the crash: “The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid. We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

According to KSHB, Reid admitted to police that he was the driver of the Ram pickup truck, and the Chiefs also confirmed Reid’s identity, connecting him to the scene. Police could also smell alcohol on Reid’s breath, and his eyes were bloodshot.

According to a search warrant application, Reid, 35, told police he had two or three drinks and was on prescription drug Adderall before the crash. Police also did a blood draw and conducted an initial and full sobriety test, which confirmed four clues of driver impairment. Reid was then transported to the hospital after complaining of stomach pains.

Britt Reid previously pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges back in 2008.

Kansas City is scheduled to leave for Tampa, Florida on Saturday afternoon for the Super Bowl where Reid will not be coaching with the team on Sunday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The 2020 season was Britt Reid’s eighth season with the club.

No charges have been filed up to this point.
