Chiefs waive RB Josh Caldwell, sign TE

Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of tweaks to the roster Monday night, signing journeyman tight end Manasseh Garner and releasing NW Missouri State running back Josh Caldwell.

The Chiefs saw minimal production from backup tight ends, Blake Bell, Deon Yelder, John Lovett, and Nick Keizer on Saturday night against the Bengals. The addition of Manasseh Garner will certainly add competition.

Garner returns to the Chiefs after spending time on the team’s training camp roster his rookie year back in 2015. He was also with the Cleveland Brown for a short time the same year until landing on Buffalo Bills practice squad to cap off his rookie year.

In 2016, Garner was released by the Bills and signed to a future reserve contract with the Broncos who released him during final cuts on August 29.

The following October, he returned to the Bills spending most of the time on the practice squad before getting cut by the team once more.

On May 15, 2017, he signed with the Washington Redskins where he flip-flopped between the team’s practice squad and the active roster for the 2017 campaign. In 2018, his season was cut short by an injury to his ACL that put him on IR during the preseason. The ‘skins released Garner earlier this summer on June 6.

In his second stint with the Chiefs, Garner hopes to get his career back on track and be the backup tight end the Chiefs are looking for since they moved on from Demetrius Harris.

Garner takes the place of running back Josh Caldwell from NW Missouri State.

Caldwell was a guy most overlooked, being apart of a crowded backfield for the Chiefs, but Caldwell made his presence felt late during Kansas City’s 38-17 victory on Saturday, scoring a late touchdown after carrying the ball only four times for 59 yards.

His late performance looked like maybe he’d be in the mix for a spot on the final roster but General Manager Brett Veach and Head Coach Andy Reid clearly have other plans in mind. The Chiefs are in their final week of training camp and prepare to travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on the Steelers for their second preseason game.
