The Kansas City Chiefs are doing what they can to improve the roster before the new league year begins next month. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the team signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Justin Watson.

According to NFL insider Field Yates, Watson was one of three players invited to a workout held by the team on Friday afternoon. Watson was a fifth-round draft pick made by the Bucs in 2018. Since then, Watson mainly played on special teams but did see some reps on offense in each of his first three seasons. In 40 games, Watson recorded 23 catches for 258 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a knee injury that wiped out his entire 2021 campaign.

Another one of those players is a familiar name with Chiefs fans who are supporters of the Missouri Tigers football program. Former Mizzou star Shane Ray worked out for the Chiefs and tight end Josh Pederson, son of new-Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson.

Ray was a stud in his four years at Mizzou, which led to him becoming a first-round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in 2015. Ray played out his rookie deal in Denver, registering 94 tackles (64 solo), 33 QB hits, 14 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one fumble return for a touchdown. Ray’s pro went downhill from there, though, the Kansas City-native did not re-sign with Denver, and he spent the 2019 season on Baltimore’s practice squad.

After spending the 2020 season out of football, Ray signed with the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, where he’s struggled to stay healthy during the CFL’s 2021 season.
