The Kansas City Chiefs have designated running back Jerick McKinnon to return from injured reserve on Saturday, which could add an extra layer of depth to their backfield in time for the Super Bowl. McKinnon played a vital role in the Chiefs’ victory over Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII, and they hope he can do the same on Sunday.

McKinnon has a 21-day window to practice with his teammates. The 31-year-old has been out of football since injuring his groin against the New England Patriots in Week 15 on December 17. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Chiefs’ decision to move McKinnon off IR on Saturday afternoon via X.

McKinnon had limited playing time due to his injury, appearing in only 12 games. During this time, he made 21 rushing attempts for 60 yards and scored a touchdown. He also caught 25 passes for 125 receiving yards and scored four touchdowns.

Unfortunately, he was put on injured reserve the day before the Chiefs’ Christmas Day game against the Las Vegas Raiders. If McKinnon can play in the big game on Sunday, it would give quarterback Patrick Mahomes an extra weapon to utilize, particularly in the red zone, where the experienced running back is most effective.
