Chiefs, Trey Smith agree on 4-year, $94M extension

Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith becomes the highest-paid guard after agreeing to a contract extension on Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs had until 3 p.m. Central Time to reach an agreement with Smith, per the league’s deadline for extending players under the Franchise Tag.

Smith’s new contract is a four-year extension worth $94 million, with $70 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid guard in the NFL entering the 2025 season.

Smith was under the franchise tag since March 2 and would’ve been paid $23.4 million if a deal had not been struck before this afternoon. Instead, Smith’s future with Kansas City is locked in, which means the Chiefs can rest assured that the interior of the o-line won’t be something they’ll need to worry about for a while.

The club is already dealing with issues around both offensive tackle spots and is tasked with finding a new left guard after trading Joe Thuney earlier this offseason. For those reasons, the Chiefs don’t need any more holes forming along the offensive line, and extending Smith is a great preventative measure.

Smith entered the league as the Chiefs’ 6th-round draft choice in 2021 and was a long shot to make the opening-day roster at the start of training camp that year. To the coach’s surprise, however, Smith’s violent and physical style of play that he used during his SEC days earned him the starting right guard spot over veteran Kyle Long.

Since then, Smith played a key role along the offensive line that helped Kansas City make four AFC Championship games and win two Super Bowls.

Now with his future secured, Smith can shift his focus to protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs aim to collect more championships for the seasons to come.
