Chiefs grant Justyn Ross a fresh start after requesting his release

The Kansas City Chiefs are just a few days away from the start of training camp at Saint Joe, but there will be one long-time member who won’t be competing for a roster spot this season.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs waived wide receiver Justyn Ross on Wednesday afternoon. Pelissero reports Ross, 25, went to the team’s front office and requested his release, which was granted.

Ross signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Ross missed all of his rookie season while recovering from foot surgery he had over the offseason. Over the next two seasons, he spent most of his time on the Chiefs’ practice squad but did appear in 12 games, making just six receptions for 53 yards.

Ross was once viewed as a future first-round draft talent after his first two seasons at Clemson, when he caught 112 passes for 1,865 yards and 17 TDs. But a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine that required surgery caused him to miss all of the 2020 campaign and plummeted his draft stock.

While with the Chiefs, Ross was constantly buried amongst a competitive wide receiver room. Now that he’s a free agent, Ross has the opportunity to reset his professional career as he searches for a new NFL team.
